Is there anything more relaxing than a massage? We have been providing massage services in Atlanta for over a decade and we’re pleased to offer Thai yoga massage as part of our therapeutic treatments. If you’ve ever had any type of massage, then you’ll be familiar with that wonderful post-massage glowing feeling of relaxation and bliss. It’s similar to the feeling one might experience after a great yoga class. Thai massage is a lovely way to take some time to focus on yourself while invigorating your body and mind. For those not familiar with Thai yoga massage, we’ve prepared a run-through of its history, what to expect, and its many benefits below.

What is Thai Yoga Massage?

Thai yoga massage is an ancient healing practice that’s over 2,500 years old. Born in Thailand (I’m sure you could have guessed that one!), its purpose is to bring the body to a deep state of relaxation. This is achieved through a combination of acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures. A little different from a traditional massage where you are passively lying while the masseuse rubs your muscles, Thai yoga massage includes some gentle movements and postures, meditation, and breathing techniques.

What to Expect During a Thai Yoga Massage?

During the massage, the masseuse will manipulate your body into a series of gentle yoga postures while rocking, cracking, stretching, and pulling your body. If this seems intimidating, don’t be alarmed! Thai yoga massage is a gentle practice and your masseuse will make sure to communicate with you to establish your physical and mental limits. It massage uses no oils or lotions and you remain fully clothed. Your massage will take place on the ground on a mat and is a full-body experience, meaning that it begins at the feet and works its way up to your head. There will be sitting and lying down poses your masseuse will take you through.

What Are the Benefits of Thai Yoga Massage?

There are both mental and physical benefits to a Thai yoga massage. Deep relaxation, relief from muscle and joint pain, improved muscle flexibility, and better range of motion are a few of the physical benefits. Since this type of massage uses acupressure techniques, it restores the flow of energy throughout the body.

What to Wear to Thai Yoga Massage?

Unlike other massages, you will remain fully clothed during your Thai massage. Loose, comfortable clothing should be worn. Avoid jeans and clothing with elements that might dig into the skin, like buttons or zippers. No shoes or sock are worn and women may choose to tie their hair back in a comfortable way to avoid it getting in the way during a massage.
